Start Your Own Web Design Business
If you want to do business on the Web, you must have an Internet presence. But most people have no idea how to build and design a website. That's where a smart entrepreneurial type might find an opportunity for the perfect home-based business. If you're creative and Web-savvy, starting your own web design business could be the perfect startup for you.
The first thing you'll need if you want to sell your web design skills is an Internet presence of your own. And it will be your calling card, so make it look good. Make sure it's perfect. This is where you'll direct potential clients for an example of your work.
Make yourself familiar with other business websites. Design and layout are important, but so is ease of use. Are the sites easy to navigate? Do they positively reflect the service or product they're meant to promote? Are they pleasing to the eye? Make notes about the sites you like, don't like, and why.
Start building a portfolio of work, whether it's building sites for yourself or for a friend or non-profit agency. These references will be important in building your reputation and business. If writing copy isn't your strong suit, consider subcontracting to a professional. Nothing spells unprofessional like a site with misspelled words and incorrect grammar.
Advertise your services on the Internet and in your community. Have business cards printed and drop them off at small businesses in your area. Most business owners have realized the necessity of having a Web presence these days. But many have no idea how to make it happen. That's where you come in.

Work from Home Writing for the Web and iGoogle Update
Found this job opportunity on craigslist. As always, do your own due diligence. A small, but growing, company is looking for web content and press release writers. "Writers must be skilled in writing 400 to 600-word blog posts, press releases, and other Web content."
This job can be performed from home. If interested, email a resume and writing samples to: job-718868539@craigslist.org

On another note: I posted earlier this week about my site's content failing to update on iGoogle. Most people said they were getting my posts as usual. But a few people said they were also having difficulty with iGoogle not updating.
I got a very nice note from Google indicating that they are aware of the problem with iGoogle not always updating in a timely fashion, and they are working on it. So I guess we'll just have to be patient.
I post twice a day most days. So if you don't get an update on your iGoogle page, check on the site. And thanks for reading!

Is it More Difficult to Raise Girls or Boys?
I've got three girls. And I can tell you this: girls are emotional roller coasters. They're up. They're down. They're up again. It can be mentally draining. But when I talk to mothers of boys, they say that although their sons are pretty much drama-free, communication can be a problem. Boys keep more inside. So is it more difficult to raise boys or girls? What do you think?
I found a great article at CNN.com that explores the issue in-depth, even looking at the science behind what makes boys and girls so different. It's Is it Harder to Raise Boys or Girls? by Paula Spencer of Parenting.com. Read it and let me know what you think.

It's Swim Meet Season...Lemonade Anyone?
Well, it's that time of year again when parents sit and time for hours on end in the 100-degree heat. Yes, it's swim meet season. We have our first swim meet of the summer tonight. And although I'm looking forward to watching my daughter swim, I am NOT looking forward to the scorching heat.
The pool we are going to tonight has absolutely no shade. So we'll all stand around dripping, desperately searching for something cool to drink. It reminded me of the cartoon above. Enjoy!

Happy Father's Day!
I don't get to see my father often enough. He lives a couple of hours from my home. And despite the fact that he's in his seventies and has had a heart attack and multiple hip replacement operations, he's still the hardest working man I know. He currently has a part-time job and a side business.
He's always worked hard. I can't remember him having less than two jobs at a time when I was growing up. And they often weren't the kind of jobs most people would want to do. But they put a roof over our heads and food on the table, so he got up every morning and went to work.
Somehow though, despite working long hours, he made time for us kids and for family vacations. I have many happy memories of my childhood, and many of those were in his presence. He was a great dad to us and a great husband to my mom, who died in 1987. Now he's a great granddad to my three kids and a great husband to my stepmother, Kay, who I love.
Happy Father's Day, Dad. I love you.

Solution for iGoogle Not Updating Feeds
Well, I finally solved "my" problem with feeds not updating on my iGoogle home page. I thought it was just my Work at Home Mom Revolution feed. But it was actually all of my feeds. I just assumed a lot of people were on vacation this week. (Yes, I was a little slow on the draw there.) Here's the fix that solved it for me. If you're also having this difficulty, it might work for you. I found it at the iGoogle Support page:
Reverting to the most recent backup may fix your problem. To revert, visit http://www.google.com/ig/settings
Click the "Restore Now" button at the bottom of the page. This will restore an earlier version of iGoogle. You then must hit the refresh button. Ta-da! Hope this works for those of you having difficulty.
Unfortunately, I'm also having this issue on My Yahoo homepage. I'll have to get to work on that.
Are Bread Lines in Our Future?
I remember reading somewhere that during the Great Depression, people lined up on city streets for a free apple. And last night, when I stopped by the local grocery store to pick a few things up, I began to wonder if history might repeat itself. I paid almost $3 for a jar of peanut butter. Now I know in some parts of the country $3 may sound inexpensive. But just a couple of months ago, I regularly bought it for half that.
And that's not the only food price that's shot up. I noticed higher prices all over the store. I found it particularly sad that my grocery store no longer gives out coupons at the checkout. It used to be the case that after paying for your groceries, a coupon targeted specifically to you would be printed from the register. I used them regularly. But no more. Apparently, the grocery store can no longer afford it.
What was even more disheartening was coming home to see an ABC News story on my Google home page that asked the question: Are We Living in the Last Century? What do you think? I'm off to eat a very expensive peanut butter sandwich.

How Much Sleep is Too Much?
I woke up this morning after five hours sleep and felt pretty good. But it was early, so I laid back down and fell asleep for another few hours. When I woke up the second time, I didn't feel well at all. I was achy. My head hurt. Which made me start to wonder: how much sleep is enough, and how much is too much?
So I did a little surfing and found this article. It's very interesting. Surprisingly, more is not necessarily better. Past a certain point, sleep doesn't benefit you and, in fact, may actually harm you. Check the article out. It's Too Much Sleep as Dangerous as Too Little at CBC.ca. It will definitely make you think.

"The system is a fast-growing, unique method that helps advertisers get tremendous value out of their ad buys (lots of spots, very low cost) and helps radio stations quickly, easily and confidentially sell their “unsold” inventory that would otherwise go to waste.
"Microsoft Office Live has asked Bid4Spots to provide a radio buying tool for their community of users and we are seeking Media Auction Tour Guides to help their members understand the process of creating an auction and creating a commercial."
This sounds like a great opportunity. Training is provided. This is not a sales position. Those looking to reenter the workforce are encouraged to apply. If interested in this opportunity, please go to: http://www.MyChoiceEngine.com/Role/45830
Good luck!

Start a Handmade Greeting Card Business from Home
Craft businesses are springing up all over the Web, and despite the appearance of e-cards, the greeting card industry has remained strong. People just feel a delivered card - one that you can hold and read and save - is more personal. That's why a handmade greeting card business might be a perfect startup for stay-at-home creative types.
One of the biggest factors to consider is how to price the cards. If you decide to sell on a site like Etsy, you need to factor in the cost of listing fees and shipping. Other venues for selling your cards are local craft shows and gift shops. Since you will either be paying a fee to display your cards or sharing a percentage of your profit, it's important to factor that into your price.
Another possible area to focus on might be local businesses, particularly at Christmas, when many will want to send out a personalized greeting to their customers. Other potential customers might be real estate professionals and service owners. And don't forget the opportunity presented by the Internet. An online presence for your handmade card business is a must.
Finally, keep good records. It's important to track your profits. But also, make sure to keep a record of all materials purchased, along with receipts. If you spend money to advertise, keep an account of this also. This will all be important come tax time, when you'll have the opportunity to offset your earnings with expenses.
Here's a great site with some great handmade card ideas. The picture above is one of Creative Shari's designs.

The Surprising Thing Some Moms are Doing to Make Money from Home
About ten years ago, give or take a year (my brain is tired), I did something from home to make money that was shocking to a lot of my friends. It wasn't something most people would even consider trying. Because it was then, and is now, very risky. But I did it and was fairly successful at it.
I was a day trader. I traded stocks from my home computer, sometimes making four or five trades a day. I would buy on good news, watch the stock price rise a nickel or dime, then sell and take the profit. Sometimes I made $50. Sometimes I made much more. It just depended on how much I had invested, how much the stock went up, and how long I had the nerve to stay in the game.
It was nerve-wracking. Once I lost big (but jumped right back in and made most of it back within a few hours). And I finally got out of it. The market was going through a correction, and I felt it was getting too risky. And frankly, unless you can afford to lose money, I don't recommend it to anyone.
But I did see this article, The Secret Lives of Stay-at-Home Mommy Speculators and thought it was interesting. So I wanted to share. Seems Japanese housewives have jumped into the market and are causing somewhat of a scandal. Again, I do not recommend day trading as a career. But I found the article interesting, because it really makes you think about the whole new world of possibilities the Internet has opened up for women who want to make money from home. Enjoy!

Dry Drowning: Read This if Your Kids Swim
Just a quick post. Someone on a message board I frequent just posted this story. I had never heard of "dry drowning," and I'm sure most parents haven't. If you have kids who swim, read this Today.com article on the subject.
Start Your Own Home Herb Business
Having a herb garden and perhaps a herb business has always been a fantasy of mine. I've checked books out at my local library on the subject and perused gourmet store shelves, daydreaming about how much fun it would be to grow my own herbs from home and sell them to restaurants and stores.
And there are only a couple of things standing in my way. Number one: I don't have any sun in my yard. I live in the midst of a tall stand of pines. Number two: I can't keep a plant alive to save myself. I am the original brown thumb.
But I cling to the fantasy. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll have a patch of sunny land, and I can give it a try. In the meantime, if you're good in the garden and have a sunny spot, this is a home business you may want to consider. I found this great article in Mother Earth News that not only details how one woman started a home-based herb business, but also how much she brings in with it and how she does it. It's Start a Home Business with Herbs! I am salivating just reading it. Enjoy!
