Free Summer Movies for Kids at Regal Entertainment

I posted about summer movies for kids last week. But I've found another, even better deal. It's Regal Entertainment's Free Family Film Festival. It goes on for 9 weeks, every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. And it's F-R-E-E.

Here's a link to their website, where you can search for your state and see what movies are playing in your area. It's a great change of pace for the kids during the summer.

Latest Savings Craze: Playing the CVS Game

I read an article last week about the latest savings craze circling the Internet. It's the CVS Savings Game. It started, I believe, when Get Rich Slowly posted its article How to Save Hundreds by Playing the Drugstore Game. It was a guest post by Cathy at Chief Family Officer, also a great site.

Now I'll have to say that after reading it, I thought: too much work. It did sound like a great way to save money. But it sounded like a drain on my already depleted brain cells. So I filed it away in my noggin and figured I'd take a look into it later.

Then today, I see WiseBread's Carrie Kirby's post Drugstore Freebies: More Than Junk Food and Harsh Chemicals. Carrie's first reaction was similar to mine. Too much work. Not enough payoff. But then she actually tried it out and got some pretty impressive results. And now she's one of the converted.

If you'd like to know more about how the CVS Game works, take a look at the two posts above. After rereading the first and having a look at Carrie's post, I may have to fire up my brain cells and try it out myself.

To top it off, I found a great link to this coupon at Chief Family Officer. It's a $10 off coupon on a $30 in-store purchase at Walgreen's. It's good only on May 30th, however. So jump right on it if you want to take advantage.

Ka-ching!

Lounging Around, Eating Bon-Bons...Not

I spend an inordinate amount of time surfing the Net when I should be transcribing or cleaning my house. But you are the benefactors of my leisure (which, according to the last article link below, is a benefit of my being a stay-at-home mom). Here are some great posts/articles/resources I've come across in the last few days while trying to put off doing actual work.

If you're trying to figure out how you're going to afford a summer vacation this year - as I am - this will be quite helpful:

And an article which annoyed the mess out of me, and where you may want to leave a comment:

Oh, to come home from a weekend at my cabin (laughing hysterically) and leisurely unpack while watching soap operas and eating bon-bons (choking on them). Is she serious?

The Number 1 Freelancing Mistake

As an independent contractor, how much I make or don't make is pretty much up to me. I can choose to accept less money for my time, devaluing it, or I can ask for more. This is true of all freelance work, whether it's transcription, writing, research - you name it. You're only worth as much as you believe you're worth.

And if you don't ask for it, you definitely won't get it. It always saddens me to see people willing to work for much less than they're worth. Don't get me wrong. I understand there are times when any job is better than no job. But too often, I see people happy, almost eager, to work for nothing.

Don't undervalue yourself! If you're not sure how much a job you're bidding on is worth, do some research and find out the going rate. As a freelancer, no one else is going to be thinking about your interests. Be your own advocate.

Chris Garrett at Freelancing Folder has a great post for those of you who do freelance work from home. It's My Top 5 Biggest Freelance Mistakes. My favorite, which would definitely be number one on my list of freelancing mistakes, is: Under-pricing.

Oh Yes, Please! More Coffee!

This is one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year for me. The school year is ending. The kids have exams. And it seems like I can't make enough money to keep up with the bills that are coming due. I think May and December are, without a doubt, the two most expensive months of the year. I'm sure it varies for everybody. But for me, it definitely seems the case.

At any rate, I thought I'd share this cartoon, as it's exactly how I'm feeling right now. I don't think I've ever downed as much coffee as I've downed in the last week. I've had two computer crashes, spent a couple of days with no Internet access, and now it's payback time. The bills are still coming due. Time to play catchup. So yes, please! More coffee!

$1 Summer Movies for Kids

One of my fondest memories as a kid was going to summer movies with my friends. All the neighborhood children would pile into a few cars and head to the local theater to see old Disney movies. And our parents loved it, because it kept us busy for a few hours.

If your kids enjoy movies, AMC has a great deal this summer for kids. They're offering $1 movies from June 25th to August 6th, every Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. Groups can purchase advance tickets one week in advance, starting June 18th at the box office or online. Check it out!

Millions Homeless: Helping the Victims of China's Earthquake

I was reading this morning about the devastating earthquake in China and its aftereffects. If you've watched any of the television coverage, you can see the desperation on the faces of those who have lost friends, family, and home. Millions of families are now living in makeshift tents. Hungry and exhausted, many have not only lost their home; they've lost their only child.

The government is making an appeal to the world for tents to shelter people until their homes can be rebuilt or they can be relocated. If you would like to help, the Network for Good is accepting donations for Chinese Earthquake Relief. Another reliable relief organization is The American Red Cross, where you can also donate to the victims of the cyclone in Myanmar.

Start Your Own Resume Writing Business

One of the simplest, low-cost businesses to start from your home is a resume writing business. Most people already have most of the equipment necessary to run this business. So if you're a quick typist with a strong grasp of grammar, this might be the perfect home job for you.

What you'll need:

Computer
Internet access
Printer
Phone
Dictionary (Online will do)
Business cards
File cabinet (Business papers can be stored on your computer, but make sure you have backup.)
A copy of Microsoft Word is invaluable (But other word processing software will do.)

Getting started:

  • Register your business with federal, state, and city offices (Check the requirements in your state.)
  • Create a client questionnaire with all the pertinent inquiries to help you generate a resume.
  • Set up a website for your business with the ability to upload and download files. (Important!)
  • Advertise in local newspapers, craigslist, message boards (in signature), etc.
  • After each client fills out your questionnaire, interview the person through email, phone, or in person to make sure you have all relevant information.
  • Using information obtained, write the resume and cover letter. There are templates available online for resumes. Just Google "resume template," and you will get plenty of results.
  • Have the client approve the resume and cover letter. Then either print it and deliver it, or upload it through an ftp server to your client. Alternately, with the client's approval, you can email it as an attachment.
  • Bill your client. PayPal has a very handy billing tool that's perfect for this. However, your client will have to sign up on PayPal to pay you this way.

Letting Your Children Learn Hard Lessons

My almost 21-year-old daughter bought a puppy a few days ago. She's adorable and looks a lot like the dog pictured above. She's a golden retriever, which I've heard are very sweet and companionable. But puppies are a lot of trouble.

I tried to warn my daughter what she's letting herself in for. In my experience, puppies are ten times harder than any baby. Babies wear diapers and aren't bounding around from morning 'til night weeks after they're born. Puppies, like children, are a 24/7 responsibility.

But she did it anyway. So I got a phone call this morning. She awoke to find the puppy throwing up on her pillow. And while she was cleaning that up, the puppy wet her comforter. I don't want to say I told her so. But I told her so.

How to Start Your Own Pet Sitting Business

Do you like animals? Do you want to work from a home office? And are you looking for a job with very little overhead? If you answered yes to all these questions, then pet sitting might be the perfect business for you.

  • The first step, as with any business, is to make a plan. Pet sitters most often target dog and cat owners as potential clients. But you may want to consider more exotic pets (birds, rabbits, etc.) It's best to limit your service area to within 10 miles of your home, as this will make mapping your work easier and keep gas costs to a minimum.
  • Decide what your per-visit rate is going to be. Most pet sitters charge between $15 and $20. But more affluent areas may be willing to pay more for your service. Also take into consideration how much you will be doing on each visit. Some visits may be as simple as a feeding. Some may require that you walk and play with the pet or administer medicine. Adjust accordingly.
  • Advertise your pet sitting business by having cards printed. Hand them out to everyone you meet. Also, have flyers printed and post them on public bulletin boards. It helps to make sure the flyers have pictures of cats and dogs, as this will attract the attention of pet owners to your ad. Make sure all your contact information is on them - name, phone numbers, email address.
  • Don't forget to post your flyer at pet stores and veterinary offices - with permission, of course. Ask yourself where pet owners congregate. Dog parks on a Saturday morning are a great place to hand out your business card. Many pet businesses also create a website and list it in local directories. Do whatever you can to get your business in front of the public.

Digging Your Way Out of Debt

As many Americans are finding out right now, when the economy takes a downturn, life can become much smaller. Vacations get canceled. Purchases get postponed. In this era of unbelievably high gas prices, making a simple trip to the mall requires some forethought. But hard times can be even tougher if you are in debt.

Food and gas prices continue to rise, but those credit card payments still have to be made. So what steps can you take to begin the climb out of your bottomless debt pit? Tracey McBride, author of Frugal Luxuries: Simple Pleasures to Enhance Your Life and Comfort Your Soul recommends you start by taking these steps (and I warn you, they are painful):

1. Phone a creditor. Find out what you can do to get started knocking down your debt. Work out a payment arrangement. Some creditors are even willing to take a smaller lump sum just to get the debt settled. Keeping the lines of communication open is crucial, especially when you are going through difficult financial times.

2. Cut up any unnecessary credit cards you own. Some people feel the necessity to have one emergency card. But get rid of all the rest.

3. Write out a simple Money Map of your earnings and expenses. This will force you to think about where your money is going and see places where you might easily cut back.

4. "List all the areas in your life in which you are overspending. Ask yourself how you might realistically reduce your spending."

Taking the first steps towards getting back on financial track can be hard. But the rewards, especially with regard to peace of mind, are great.

The employment page does indicate there may be LD costs associated with training (not sure, but I think this stands for long distance). For more information and to apply for this position, visit the VoiceLog Employment Opportunities page. Good luck!

Websites and User Friendly Web Designs

FIVE SECONDS... that’s how long you have to capture the attention of a website visitor. Does your website engender trust, credibility and reliability within 5 seconds? Site visitors are impatient people seeking immediate gratification … they want to ooh and ahh … even before the page is fully loaded.

I've been designing websites since 1995, in the hey-day before Google, Yahoo and Web 2.0. The one thing that has not changed is the user; they want their information faster. If they have a 28K modem, they want the information at the speed of 56K. If they have DSL, they want it to load at cable modem speeds. A Web Designer has to take this into consideration when designing a site. At the same time, they have to create a site that captures the attention of the visitor and prompt them to interact with the site, and even buy something or fill out a form (the goals of the website).

User-friendly web design always begins with the visual effect.

COLORS

Colors are a “primary” factor. Most sites are designed with a white background and black fonts. This combination is eye-friendly for a comfortable reading environment. Eye strain is a definite no-no. If you want your visitors to read text, make it as easy as possible … that starts with the right color combination.

The obvious potential exception would be an entertainment site with a high reliance on multi-media video and photos. Different color combinations may be desirable here for emphasis and enhancing the entertainment value of the site.

The Psychology of Color

Check these 3 sites out for great insights on how psychology and color work together:

1. http://www.squidoo.com/colorexpert
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_psychology
3. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/colors1.html

Entertainment sites are about emotion, passion, energy, enthusiasm. Colors to be used are always strong. For instance black is used for Power and Authority while red is used to evoke passion, high energy and enthusiasm.

A business site, for instance a mortgage company, should not use the color scheme I suggest in the entertainment sites. Here I use blues and greens as these colors evoke trust, peace of mind and a sense of calm. The visitor is considered to be nervous entering the site because they are making a decision about pretty important things like their home, their money and their overall finances. They need someone they can trust.

LAYOUT

Layouts begin and end with simplicity. Make the site complex with a lot of so-called “features” and you will lose a great deal of your audience.

With layouts, “less is more” … the fewer feature or complexities, the easier it is for the visitor to understand your message and “engage.”

It’s always a good idea to check out your competition and see what it is you actually like about their website … view it as a customer not just a competitor … it can be a useful experience.

Always keep in mind the ultimate goal of your website … what is it you want the visitor to actually do … your layout should reflect the shortest distance between the first impression of your website and that ultimate goal you seek.

Additional Key Considerations

1. Simple Site Navigation is a must. Your visitor has to be able to move through the site quickly and in a logical sequence that they have become used to when visting other websites. They want their info fast and if your navigation goes against the generally accepted conventions of navigation, the visitor will move elsewhere.

2. Make your paragraphs easy to read... organize your information well by highlighting lists by number, symbols or bullets.

3. Look throughout our site and see that paragraphs are not just streams of uninterrupted text. The words, sentences, paragraphs et al are woven together through a structured hierarchy of organizational enhancers that make it easy for the visitor to read and understand and engage.

4. Don’t try to crush your competition with an overwhelming advantage in website features. Remember the Panasonic slogan … "just slightly ahead of our time"... keep this in mind here. Keep your “competitive bullets” in your gun and holster until they are needed. For instance, if your competitor doesn’t have a newsletter sign-up, add it. If they respond by adding one, consider adding a click-to-chat feature and so on and so on.

So, website design is about gaining the attention of the visitor through strong use of color, content, ease of use and navigation. Most of all … KEEP IT SIMPLE!
