Does Eating Cheese Before Sleep Cause Strange Dreams?

I know this is way off-topic for my blog, but I find it very interesting. I've been having the most bizarre dreams lately, and many more than usual. So I was trying to figure out what it is that I'm doing differently in the last week or so.

And after thinking on it a while, I realized what it is. In an effort to diet, I've recently started trying to incorporate more protein into my diet and eat foods that will keep me satisfied longer. One of the foods that I've been eating more of is cheddar cheese.

So I did a search online with the words "cheese" and "dreams." And sure enough, eating cheese before sleep has long been connected with an increased frequency of dreams, and dreams of a bizarre nature.

In fact, the British Cheese Board did a study and found that not only does cheese affect your dreams, but the type of cheese you eat can affect the type of dream you have. You can listen to an NPR broadcast about it here.

I had long heard that Welsh Rarebit, a favorite of the British, could cause dreams and sleepwalking. But I, like many of you, I'm sure, had no idea what Welsh Rarebit was made from. Well, it's made from cheese - most commonly cheddar.

My brother swears that drinking a big glass of purple Kool-Aid before bed will take you places you can't imagine. He credits the high sugar content. But why purple, I wonder? At any rate, I'm all for having a dream with Johnny Depp and a human pyramid. What do you think?

Living the Dream: Becoming a Digital Nomad

If you've read this blog for very long, you know I'm extremely interested in the whole concept of the "digital nomad," the person who travels freely all over the world, working from wherever he or she is at the moment.  Technology has made this possible for people today.  Everything has come together at this moment in time to make the dream of living the digital nomad lifestyle possible.

There is literally nothing about my job right now that would prevent me from doing it from anywhere in the world.  I'm only tied to my location by my children's ages and my unwillingness to uproot them.  But I dream of traveling and supporting myself via the computer.  If you're interested in becoming a digital nomad also, read Three Paths to Being a Digital Nomad by Philip Brewer at WiseBread.

Are Plastic Bottles Making Your Family Sick?

I've been following the recent news lately regarding plastic bottles and Bisphenol A, or BPA, the chemical found in hard, clear polycarbonate products.  This includes plastic baby bottles and the bottled water many of us buy at the grocery store.

One of my teenage daughters carries one with her continuously, taking a sip every 30 minutes or so.  Another one takes bottled water with her to swimming practice every day.  So the more I read, the more convinced I am that we should throw out the bottled water entirely.

Recent studies in the U.S. revealed BPA in the blood or urine 95% of people tested and demonstrated a link between BPA and a host of illnesses, including obesity.  To read more about BPA and how it might affect you and your family, read Dr. Cara Natterson's Are Plastic Bottles Dangerous for Kids? at MomLogic.

Hot Weight Loss Tips: Brought to You by My Vacation Bulge

I always eat on vacation.  I'm not going to deny myself a Dairy Queen Banana Cream Blizzard while everyone around me indulges.  I just can't do it.  I did try to get in some walks on the beach, chose water instead of soda a few times.  But still I came home, stepped on the scale, and faced the bad news: I put on six pounds in two weeks.

And trust me when I say those were not six pounds I could afford.  So now it's time to face the music, time to haul out the Lean Cuisines, the Splenda, my fat pants.  And it's time to find new ways to cut calories without feeling deprived.  Because it really ticks me off that as much as I love food, it does not love me.

So I'll share some recent weight loss tips I came across.  I'm heading to the grocery store tonight to stock up.  I can't wait to try the Fat-Free Cool Whip on graham crackers.  Check out the links above for yourself!

A Rant Against The Birthday Treat Bag

My kids are way past the birthday party with balloons and streamers age.  They much prefer to be taken out to a nice restaurant for their birthday celebrations.  And I can't be more thankful that those days are past.  Birthday party-throwing was not something I enjoyed or excelled at.

Even now, I shudder when I hear the words Chuck E. Cheese.  So I found this article, Please Stop the Treat Bag Madness, by John Cain to be interesting, if not a little painful to read (memories of ice-cream gooey fingers past).  Enjoy!

Tips for a Smooth Back-to-School Transition

The hardest part of getting ready for back-to-school with teenagers is shifting their bedtime to a reasonable hour. They've gotten used to staying up way too late and sleeping in. So I'm nudging them to bed earlier this week, but I know it will still be a hard transition.

I'm already hearing the moans and groans, the "I hate school" whine. I feel for them I really do. But whether we're ready or not, it's here. With older kids, it's more about preparing them mentally for the return to discipline and homework and early bedtimes.

But with younger kids, preparation is key. That's why you should check out Do It Now! Tips to Get Ready for Back-to-School at OrganizedHome.com. They've even got printable forms there to help you get started. Check it out!

I don't know if you've been following the news, but two men in Georgia claim to possess the body of BigFoot (actually, one of many they are said to have seen).

True Mom Confessions: You Are Not Alone

This mom gig is hard.  It's true.  You're expected to work 24/7.  There is no pay.  And you can't just fake it.  Because in the end, however it all turns out, good or bad, you're going to be held responsible - by your kids and their psychiatrists, if not by yourself.

Most days, I think I'm doing a pretty good job.  All my kids are doing well in school.  I've got two starting their junior year in high school, one getting ready to graduate college this year.  No drugs.  No tattoos.  No nose rings.

But I've always felt that sharing the trials you've been through, with your kids and as a mother, is helpful to other moms going through their own hard times.  It's hard to see, when your kid is going through the Tantrum Two's, that it won't last forever, that it will pass, only to be replaced by some other equally difficult phase.  But it will.  I assure younger moms of this all the time.

It always made me feel better, as a young mom, to be reassured - as I looked down at my preschooler, rolling around on the grocery store linoleum, screaming at the top of her lungs - that this type of behavior was not unheard of in a 3-year-old.

So I'll share a site I found with you today.  It's True Mom Confessions.com.  Read it and take comfort.  You are not alone.

Michael Phelps and Olympic Fever at Our House

We're still on vacation, but we're keeping up with the Olympics.  And since my daughter is a swimmer, we've definitely got Michael Phelps fever.  It was so exciting to watch him blow the competition in the pool away last night.

My daughter swims with several people who made it to the Olympic Trials this year, one even making it to the finals in her event. So we're glued to the tube when the swimming is on.

I was very impressed with the opening ceremonies in Beijing.  It was just stunning to see.

Anyway, I continue to work a little, play a little on vacation.  According to a U.K. psychiatrist, this makes me "stupid."  Check it out ...

Here in the Land of Limited Food Choices

As you know if you've been reading this week, I'm on vacation at Emerald Isle, NC.  Now I love Emerald Isle.  It's a great family beach.  But your food choices (inexpensive choices which will feed 7 people) are limited.  And the stove in the house we're staying at takes forever just to boil water.

So we feel like we're in a constant search for food.  Thank God we're going out tonight for my daughter's birthday.  Because frankly, I don't have the energy to continue the hunt today.

Why No Vacation Pics?

I had promised to try to post some vacation pics this week.  But as luck would have it, not a one of my three daughters brought the cord that connects their digital cameras to the computer for upload.  I definitely need to get my own camera.

We're at Emerald Isle on the NC coast.  It's been extremely hot this week, but it's supposed to cool off this weekend.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  There's a giant deck on top of the beach house, so we set an umbrella and fan up on it, and that's where we've been hanging out during the hottest part of the day.

At night, it's so dark out here, you can see the stars in a way you can't back home.  We go up on the deck and watch the sky for hours.  My brother and I saw some flaming meteors the night before last.  We're excited that we'll be down here for the Perseid meteor shower next week.  Hope you all are having a great week!
