Okay. So I'm not exactly a spring chicken. I'm 46, to be exact. So as the last of my kids prepare to head off to college, I've been thinking about not only my future retirement, but how I can downsize. My biggest expense right now is my rent, which is high, percentage wise, to my income. So that would be the number one way I could scale back.
My brother, who's also in his forties, has become obsessed with what's called the Tiny House or Small House Movement. People (especially singles or older folks) are choosing to live in much smaller spaces, compact little homes that are easily moved and very inexpensive, when compared to typical housing.
The Simple Dollar has written a post about this movement, and it led me to a veritable smorgasbord of information. It's Some Thoughts on the Small House Movement: Is it Worth Considering? Have a read and let me know what you think. With our economy in the tank, I think it's the wave of the future, if not for young people, then definitely for those my age and older. Think what you could do with all the money you don't spend on a mortgage or rent!
