I've had a lot of trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep lately. Part of it is just my age. I know that as you get older, it gets harder to drop right off to sleep, and you tend to wake more during the night.
But in the last month or so, I wake up six or seven times a night. I'm having to grab a nap during the day to make up for lost sleep, and that's affecting how much work I can get done on a daily basis. Translation: it's costing me money at a time when I can't afford to make less.
I read an article recently that has me worried that my lack of sleep could cost me more than just money, though. The article, 10 Reasons Not to Skimp on Sleep by Sarah Baldauf at Yahoo News, makes it clear that there's more than my pocketbook at stake. Not getting enough sleep could cost me my life!
According to the article, if you're not getting enough sleep, you're more likely to make bad food choices, which can lead to obesity. You're more likely to have high blood pressure, heart problems, or diabetes. And you're also at a higher risk of being involved in an accident.
I recently tried melatonin for a few nights, because a friend recommended it to me. But I found that although I slept soundly, I was having terrible, disturbing dreams. I've had better luck with one tablet of magnesium before bed.
But even that doesn't always do the trick. If you've found a sure way to get a good night's sleep, share by leaving a comment. I truly feel it's my number one health threat right now, and I know it's affecting my productivity.
