Do You Plan for Your Wants?

When it comes to buying "wants," it seems to me there are three types of people: the ones who buy everything they want, the very minute they think of it, those that never buy anything they want, and those who plan for things they want and work towards being able to afford them.

I would say in the past seven or eight years, I've definitely been one of those who never buys anything that I want (or very rarely).  But I've decided that's not healthy either.  Rather, I'd like to be someone who plans for my wants and, when I reach my monetary goal, buys them.

So I've started making a list of my wants.  Some of them are also needs.  And as I work hard to pay bills, put food on the table, and save money, I'll also, on a regular basis, take some of my money and put it towards the things on my "wants" list.  I work hard.  I deserve it.  Philip Brewer of Wise Bread has written a great article on this subject.  It's Plan for Your Wants.  Check it out!

A Work at Home Mom's New Year's Resolutions

Well, the New Year swiftly approaches, and it's that time again, time to look back on the old year and look forward to the new one.  Last year started off a little rough, financially, but ended well.  So I'm hoping for a continuation of that trend.

Here are my New Year's resolutions as a work-at-home mom:

#1, and most important, I want to work less and enjoy life more.  I spend way too much time with my face in a computer monitor and my hands on a keyboard.  I need a life.

#2 I HAVE to get organized, for my own sanity.  Clutter on your desk is really clutter on your brain, and I have to do something about it.

#3 I need to start working on a schedule.  Right now, I work whenever I find the time, often late, late, late at night, which has caused me to completely mess up my body's natural time clock.  I often stay up 'til 3:00 a.m., sleep a couple of hours, at most, get up at 6:00 a.m. and see my kids off to school, then go back to sleep around 8:00 a.m. and sleep 'til noon.  Part of this is due to insomnia, but most of it is due to just plain staying up too late working.

#4 I want to work smarter, not harder.  I need to find more efficient ways to do my work, tools that will help me streamline.

#5 I want to eat better, start exercising, and lose weight.  Sitting at a desk all day has not been beneficial to my shape or health.  I know it's the biggest New Year's cliche in existence, but it's one of my resolutions.  I need to do it for me and for my kids.

#6 I will get paid what I'm worth.  I will speak up and ask for adequate compensation for my work and time.  This will also work towards helping me achieve #1 and #4.

So there they are, my New Year's resolutions for 2009.  I  hope I'll be able to look back at the end of 2009 and say I definitely made progress on each of these goals.  How about you?  What are your New Year's resolutions?

Freelance Writers: Get Paid What You're Worth

I've often heard other writers complain that they're not getting paid what they're worth because inexperienced writers are willing to work for peanuts, just to get their feet wet.  And while that may be true, it may have more to do with what we, as freelancers, are not doing.

There's a great article at Freelance Writing Jobs right now, which might shed some light on why a freelance writer might not be landing the high paying jobs he or she wants.  It's Deb Ng's 8 Reasons Why You're Not Getting the High Paying Freelance Writing Jobs, and it's loaded with the cold, hard truth.  Enjoy!

How Google Alerts Can Save You Money

I've been using Google Alerts for some time for tracking news and subjects I'm interested in.  But I never thought about using it to save money until a few days ago.  If you're interested in purchasing a particular item, type it in as a search term with the word "deal," "coupon," or "sale."

You can also set up Google Alerts for phrases like "frugal tips" "money saving tips," "save money," "frugal," "personal finance."  You get the picture.  Then just sit back and watch the alerts roll in.  You might want to set up a separate Yahoo email for this purpose, just to avoid cluttering your regular email.  I set mine to come once a day for each term.  That way, it's not overwhelming.  Enjoy!

We Believe in Santa Claus

Okay.  So I was going to post another job opportunity this afternoon - and I may still do that later.  But then I came across this article on MomLogic: I Refuse to Let My Kids Believe in Santa Claus.  The author states that she not only does not let her children believe in Santa Claus, but doesn't mind one bit when they ruin it for other children whose parents have made a different choice.

If you don't want your children to believe in Santa Claus, that's your perfect right.  I, myself, think Santa Claus is a wonderful and selfless tradition.  It's an opportunity to give, while expecting nothing in return.  It's the Spirit of Christmas.

As a Christian, it represents, to me, the gift Jesus gave freely and without strings to all who will accept: eternal life.  And that's what I explained to my children, when they eventually realized the truth as they got older.  The myth of Santa is about the spirit of giving selflessly, freely, and without expectation of thanks.

My kids are 17 (the twins) and 21 now.  They weren't crushed when they found out about Santa.  In fact, we still have Santa.  It's a beautiful tradition, and it's our tradition.  As for the author, I feel sorry for her.  I have no problem with her decision to not allow her children to believe in Santa.  It's her perfect right as a parent.

I, however, have made a different choice.  What bothers me is her smug glee when her children spoil Santa for other children.

I was reading this article today on Brainz.com.  It's 15 Ways to Hack Your Brain.  At first, I thought, "I don't think I want anyone hacking my brain.  That doesn't sound good."  But then I continued reading and found that the author was comparing hacking a computer or other device with ways to improve your brain's function.

And as someone who can't hold a thought in my head for more than 10 seconds (hence the notes and lists all over my desk), improving my brain's function is something I'm desperately in need of information about.

What were the 15 hacks, and how many am I already doing?

#1 Exercise - I get an "F" in this area.  I've been doing absolutely nothing lately that even remotely resembles exercise.

#2 Hydrate - Well, if the author means drink lots of coffee with sugar all day long, then SCORE.  If not, a big fat "F."

#3 Stimulation - Stimulation includes music, going outdoors and breathing in the smells, aromatherapy, etc.  I'll give myself a "D" on that.  I try to listen to music, light candles, etcetera every now and then.

#4 Think Happy Thoughts - I do make an effort to watch positive things on television, think hopefully, and envision happy resolutions to my problems.  So I'll give myself a "B" on this.  I'm mostly a positive person.

#5 Play Games - Now here, the author means crosswords, Soduku, a game of chess.  Brain exercise.  I think I'd get at "B" in this also, as figuring out HTML, Javascript, etc. compares favorably, I think, with any of those games.

#6 Watch Quality TV - Another "B."  I mostly watch news channels, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel.  But I won't lie.  I don't miss an episode of Gossip Girls or Grey's Anatomy.

#7 Surf the Net - SCORE!  Finally, something I can get an "A" in.

#8 Eat Brain Food - A "C."  I do my best.  But with two, sometimes three, kids to feed, I'm often more concerned with coming up with a quick, semi-nutritious meal than worrying about whether there's enough magnesium in dinner to maintain the metabolic viability of my neurons.

#9 Load up on Fish Oil - Again a "C."  I take fish oil supplements sporadically, and I love a good tuna fish sandwich.  Does that count?

#10 Eat Weeds - No, not the kind in your front yard - gingko and ginseng.  I get another "F" here, I'm afraid.  No gingko or ginseng at my house.

#11 Learn Something New - Another SCORE!  I get an "A" here.  I feel like I'm constantly learning something new.  Today, I learned the basics of building a Web page in HTML.  Not bad for a 46-year-old who can't remember what I just walked into the kitchen for.  Huh?

#12 Don't Waste Time - A "D."  I do waste a lot of time.  I'm fighting it though with lists and schedules and deadlines.  Don't give up on me yet.

#13 Actively Improve Your Memory - This is about memory games, etc.  Sorry.  Just don't have time.  And frankly, I'm not sure that they work.  So an "F" for that one.

#14 Rest - An "F."  I don't get near enough sleep, and the sleep I do get is at all the wrong times.  But I'm working on it.  I'm a night owl.  I like the night.

And finally, #15 - Have Sex - Fail.

How about you?  Are you hacking your brain?
